Call to Accountability - America's Redemption from the Past
When we view the distressing events of this time, when we watch the videos of the Pipeline protests, when we hear of yet another shooting of an unarmed black man, we must be able to bear the pain of this and at the same time to know that there is but one way to become accountable, and that is to have a change of motivation, to witness what we have become and to change it.
------------------------------
From the plains of North Dakota to the streets of Ferguson, Missouri, America is being called to accountability for its history in relation to African-Americans and its violations of land rights, treaties, and sacred customs of the indigenous peoples of this land.
What is happening now in America with respect to police violence toward young black men, the use of force at the Dakota Access Pipeline, and with the voices being raised to protect our waters and the sacred sites of our land, is our legacy – the legacy of indifference to the rights of others, the history of slavery and its aftermath even to this day, and the misuse of power to disenfranchise the rights of a less powerful group of people.
It is this lifting of the veils which never really covered our awareness, but allowed us to remain asleep to the need to change, that is happening now, happening through the very revelations that cause distress and shock to our moral and emotional centers. This distress is part of our healing, as we perceive how we, as Americans, have become so accustomed to the use of force, and even of excessive force, that it seems natural to us.
We must become accountable in order to change.
We are witnessing the purification of America in this time, in the way in which spiritual light purifies both individuals and nations by bringing to consciousness that which has been hidden, with all the pain and difficulty that this may entail, so that new decisions can be made concerning how to move forward. America is being purified by light, and as it does so, great pain can be felt on behalf of those who have been, and are, being harmed by our tendencies of the past in relation to the use of power, and on behalf of the Earth itself that is similarly being harmed by our indifference to her needs.
America is being called to accountability, and we who are witnessing this movement must be willing to feel and to take part in the transformation that is trying to happen through the awakening of our consciousness and conscience. For this is the way that purification and transformation take place – through the awareness of formerly hidden attitudes and motivations and the new decisions that can be made in relation to these, based on new awarenesses in the heart that arise in the presence of expanded light.
We are and have been a nation of virtue and of principle. We are and have been a nation founded on the principles of light and truth enunciated in our founding documents. Yet, we have not applied these principles to the parts of our life where it seemed that power and control were more important than principle. We have taken lives and we have taken land. We have claimed rights for ourselves that we have denied to others. We have held the vision of democracy, but not for all.
This is the time of our awakening, the time when the call is going forth to redeem those aspects of our history that have been covered in darkness, and to bring them to the light of a new day. This is the time of our awakening, and we serve this time best by becoming conscious participants in the becoming of this nation – a nation of principle and of vision, founded on the principles of light which hold love and equality to be the living foundation of life for all people. This must be our motto and our creed – “for all people” – for out of One have come many, some like us and some different in appearance or culture, but all emerging from the One that has created All, and all to be honored as sacred beings within the unity of life.
