For a long time now, there has existed a need within children's literature and especially in readings for the very young, to find early poems that would capture a young child's attention, while speaking to their souls and eliminating the need for violence. 

Many of the most cherished poems for children that have been handed down from earlier generations either no longer make sense in today's world, or incorporate unnecessary harm coming to beloved characters in a way that trivializes this feature.  We have only to think of some of the most favored Mother Goose rhymes such as "Jack and Jill" or "Humpty Dumpty" to recall how this works.

In addtion to the above, a new poetry has been needed which celebrates the qualities of life lived with awareness of the spiritual and of oneself as a soul.  Such early teachings, offered to the receptive minds and hearts of the very young, open the doors to a world of possibility and create an outlook on life that is taken in by osmosis rather than by cognitive learning.  What we share with our children in early verse is important, then, for it forms part of the structure of how we teach them about life, about love, and about the sacred.

For all of these reasons, "Rhymes and Poems for Children of the Light" came into being in order to express today's hopes and dreams for a better world, and to bequeath these to the children whom we have in our care.

The poems are grouped into three categories -  Poems for the Young, Poems  for Older Children, and Rhymes for the Very Young.  Here is a sample poem from the first group called "Little Fingers."

LITTLE FINGERS

Little fingers, little toes,

Little mouth, and little nose,

Every part of you so fine,

Made in shape to God's design.

Now so tiny, full of grace,

Soft of skin and bright of face,

Large of soul and large of heart,

Sent to earth to play your part,

Sweetest child from light above,

Brought to us to share your love

And here is a poem from the second group:

THE EARTH IS ONE

The earth is One, a living thing,

With heart and mind that thinks and feels,

And we who live upon her sphere

Must always treat her life as real.

For she is us, and we are her,

Forever joined in every part,

We are the dust of which she's made,

And children of her sacred heart.
